Our unique four-unit Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist certification program incorporates a holistic understanding of the science of yoga as the foundation for the study of ayurveda. 

In our Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist training program, you will learn the core concepts of ayurveda, including clinical, psychological, lifestyle, and philosophical applications of this ancient wisdom. You’ll learn how simple implementations of ayurvedic nutrition, diet, and routine can create profound transformations in your life and the lives of others. Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist training program topics include:

  • How prana (life force) and ojas (deep vitality) can be cultivated to regulate and support agni (digestive fire) for optimal health
  • A deeper knowledge of doshas (constitutions), gunas (psychological tendencies), vayus (winds or movement of prana), and koshas (sheaths)

Module 1: July 20-22

The Microcosm and Macrocosm of Ayurveda and Yoga

Module one of the Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist Program is the introduction to ayurveda, the ancient science of life. One of the oldest medical sciences in the world, ayurveda is rich with simple methods to restore your health. This session is for anyone interested in learning about the foundations of ayurveda, how ayurveda is related to yoga philosophy and practice, and how it can make you feel more at home within yourself. You will begin learning the basics of creating sustainable daily practices that support the balance of an individual’s constitution—the physical body, mental body, and sense of purpose. Yoga teachers and practitioners alike will discover how to work with asana, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation practices to support balance and overall well-being from an ayurvedic perspective.

Using interactive group work, lecture, and time for practice, you will:

  • Learn more about the philosophical and spiritual foundations of ayurveda
  • Discover how yoga and ayurveda support and complement each other
  • Become more familiar with the tri-doshic theory of ayurveda (vatapittakapha)
  • Know the difference between prakriti (unique elemental nature) and vikriti (current state of imbalance)
  • Begin to understand how to use the yogic practices of asana, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation to move toward greater wellness and balance
  • Identify how your personal yoga practice supports your health and overall sense of well-being as you move through the different seasons of life

Module 2: online anytime in August 2018

The Psychology of Ayurveda and the Physiology of Yoga

In the second session of our Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist training program, we will use the science of ayurveda to create a framework for beginning to more deeply understand the mind and the subtle body from a holistic perspective. We will continue to use yogic practices to see how the two sciences of yoga and ayurveda work together to create a beautiful, interconnected web of physiology, psychology, and spirituality that supports and nourishes the body, mind, and spirit. Using ayurveda and yoga together will help us to experience how proper energy management can support overall health, balance, and vitality.

Using interactive group work, lecture, and time for practice, you will:

  • Continue to learn more about the philosophical and spiritual foundations of ayurveda
  • Begin to understand how the physical and subtle body operate together within the context of a foundational ayurvedic framework
  • Discover how the yogic practices of asana, pranayama, and meditation facilitate efficient and effective energy management which supports the body and mind
  • Explore the three doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—in more depth, and dive into the study of the sub-doshas of each
  • Develop an understanding of how the gunas (sattvarajas, and tamas) make-up and influence the architecture of the mind
  • Learn more about the three vital essences: pranatejas, and ojas
  • Discover practices to support seasonal change and vata imbalance

Module 3: Sept. 21-23

Ayurvedic Cooking - Improving our Digestion of Food, Thoughts, and Actions

Using food as medicine is an ancient idea that many of us have lost touch with in our modern lives. The science of ayurveda uses food and spices to address specific imbalances and health concerns. In this unit, we will use ayurvedic recipes and dietary principles to support and enhance digestion of food, thoughts, and life experiences. Anyone who loves cooking or eating a delicious meal might be surprised at how vital these simple ayurvedic applications are to creating nourishing and balancing food. When you cook and eat in a way that supports optimal digestion, this creates a vibrant and solid foundation for moving forward in life and for spiritual development.

Using interactive group work, lecture, and time for practice, you will:

  • Be introduced to the six rasas (tastes) as the secret ingredient for optimal nourishment and for unlocking balance and overall wellness
  • Learn how ayurvedic digestive theory supports physical, mental, and emotional digestion
  • Understand how simple dietary changes can profoundly improve overall digestion and elimination
  • Discover how ayurvedic cooking can heal when you use food and spice combinations to address specific constitutional imbalances and other health concerns
  • Experience yogic practices that support agni and improve digestion naturally
  • Work together in the kitchen to gain hands-on experience with preparing ayurvedic recipes including kitchari, ghee, churnas (dosha specific spice mixes), chai, and many more
  • Enjoy the fruits of your labors in the kitchen, tasting your ayurvedic meals with your classmates

Module 4: Oct. 19-21

The Clinical Use of Ayurveda and Yoga

The final module of the Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist Program culminates in the practical application of ayurvedic theory. In this unit, we will apply all of the concepts we have worked with in the previous three sessions by learning how to train clients and develop treatment plans for pacifying imbalances and addressing specific health concerns and goals.

Using interactive group work, lecture, and time for practice, you will:

  • Apply the ayurvedic concepts and practices you have learned to in-person case studies and client training sessions
  • Review ethical guidelines and standards of practice for working one-on-one with clients, including intake and evaluation
  • Learn how to engage with private clients to ensure effective and professional ayurvedic consultations
  • Work with the practical application of yogic and ayurvedic philosophy and practices through recommendations for dinacharya (daily routine), asana, pranayama, and meditation
  • Assess training clients and develop specific treatment plans that include diet and lifestyle suggestions as well as supportive yogic practices
